Haliburton at a Glance
No where is the majesty of the mighty Canadian Shield more evident than in the
city of Haliburton, which is surrounded by the lush and magnificent Haliburton
forest. Located approximately 168 km (104 mi) North of Toronto
and 225 km west (140 mi) of Ottawa,
the main attraction in this region is the Haliburton
Forest & Wildlife Reserve, which boasts extensive fishing and hunting opportunities.
Bears, moose, deer, pheasants and wolves roam freely in the forest, while the
plentiful lakes offer swarms of trout, bass, sucker, perch and ling. In the winter,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing and dog sledding are the favourite activities
of locals and visitors alike. Every January, the town hosts an exciting series
of races at the Dogsled
Derby. Those who wish to do their exploring indoors can check out the Haliburton
Highlands Museum, which offers a look at the lives of early settlers in this
remote region.
